Bedford Park began as a farming hamlet north of Toronto. The hamlet was a popular stopover for farmers making their way to market in the city. The neighbourhood was likely named after the Bedford Park Hotel, which opened in 1873 at the southwest corner of Yonge Street and Fairlawn Avenue, just north of Lawrence Avenue.

In 1890 Bedford Park was amalgamated with the hamlets of Davisville and Eglinton to the south, and incorporated as the City of North Toronto. In the same year, the Metropolitan Street Railway of Toronto began service to the area, encouraging residential development.

Bedford Park is bisected by Yonge Street, lying north of Lawrence Avenue and east of Avenue Road. The northern boundary is Brooke Avenue on the West side of Yonge, and Snowdon Avenue to the east of Yonge. The eastern boundary is Ronan Avenue. There is also a school at Yonge and Lawrence called Bedford Park Public School. Catholic schools Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary  School and St.Margaret Catholic School are around the neighbourhood.

The original homes in the area were constructed between 1890 and 1940. Bedford Park was conceived as a middle class housing development on the northern boundary of the city, with mid-sized detached and semi-detached luxury homes. The relocation of the Rosedale Golf Club in 1909 to the section of the Don Valley northeast of Bedford Park brought about development of the (more moneyed) bordering neighbourhoods of Lawrence Park and Teddington Park. This has skyrocketed the property values of Bedford Park homes.

Bedford Park's quiet streets, mature trees, good schools and parks, and proximity to Highway 401 and Lawrence subway station attract young professionals and their families to the neighbourhood. Many of the original homes still stand, with a number having undergone extensive renovations. A portion of the original homes in the neighbourhood have been torn down and replaced with larger, more modern homes.

The famous Toronto Cricket Club is located in Bedford Park -Nortown neighbourhood. It's surrouding area called Cricket Club area, Sitting south of Wilson ~ between Yonge and Avenue Road - Wilson and Brooke, is a jewel ~ a well kept secret it seemed!

Well, that is just one of the fabulous things about Toronto; all the amazing tree lined neighbourhoods it has. So special to each one of us, for our own glorious reasons.

Yes, the Cricket Club pocket is a neighbourhood with an amazing sense of community, friendship & socializing. A summers walk out with the dog, can turn into a great chat with a neighbour, a drink in the backyard, or a BBQ invitation for dinner. In the busy and rushed world we live in, isn't it wonderful to be able to have a last minute, unplanned visit just next door or down the street.

Loretto Abbey on Mason Blvd.; is one of the amazing & truly beautiful landmarks of the Cricket Club neighbourhood. A Catholic girls school; Loretto was built in 1928 after outgrowing several locations around the city. It was founded by Toronto's first nuns, the Loretto Sisters, who arrived here in 1847. Today, the Abbey sits as an anchor to the beautiful streets and homes that surround it. A unique pocket in every sense; of community and the people that live here.

The Cricket Club neighbourhood contains a nice mix of housing including two and three bedroom bungalows, Tudor and cottage-style two-storey houses, and larger Georgian-style homes with spacious centre hall plans. All of the luxury houses have private drives and the lot frontages are generous, varying in size from thirty to fifty feet.

The majority of Cricket Club homes were built during the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's. These houses include many decorative features such as pretty bay windows, hardwood floors, fireplaces, french doors, wood trim, and built in cabinetry.

An established family oriented community; the local residents display a pride of ownership that can be seen on the manicured lawns and pretty gardens. Thanks to an abundance of mature trees and lack of sidewalks on most streets there is a relaxed, country charm ambience.

Cricket Club homes are in great demand because of all the amenities that this location has to offer including upscale shopping districts, excellent schools, and close proximity to public transportation and to Highway 401.

City of Toronto Definition

The City of Toronto's neighbourhood definitions place Bedford Park within a larger neighbourhood, called Bedford Park-Nortown. The border of this larger area extend to Bathurst Street on the west, Highway 401 to the north, Hillhurst Boulevard (just north of Eglinton Avenue) to the south, and zigzags from northeast to southwest along Yonge Street and Avenue Road.
