Markland Wood is a residential neighbourhood located in Etobicoke, in the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is bounded by Etobicoke Creek to the west, Elmcrest Creek to the east and surrounded by the Markland Wood Country Club. Markland Wood is the western-most residential community in Toronto along Bloor Street West, which cuts Markland Wood into approximately 1/3 to the south and 2/3 to the north. Markland Wood is part of the Etobicoke Centre riding for federal and provincial governments and Ward 3 for the municipal council.
History
Markland Wood, or Mark’s Land, was purchased by Mark Cavotti from the Silverthorn family in September 1958. Development started in 1960 after the Conservation Authority determined the high water mark levels after Hurricane Hazel. The Markland Wood neighbourhood construction was completed in 1965.
The Markland Homes Association was formed in 1962 to "Create, Foster and Maintain the Community Spirit in Markland Wood". The MHA publishes Marklander Newsletter the oldest, continuous running, community newspaper in Toronto. It was first published in 1962 and now has 10 annual issues delivered to MHA members' households.
On October 22, 2007, a massive fire struck the neighbourhood.New townhouses being built at 4333 Bloor Street West at Mill Road caught fire, burning the new townhouses to the ground. No one was injured. The rebuilt collection of townhouses was again struck by fire March 8, 2008. Fortunately, this time around, only one townhouse was damaged. The Toronto Police Service are treating these incidents as "suspicious." In July 2008, St. Clement's Catholic Elementary School had a small fire on the side next to the townhouses around 2:00 in the morning.

For starters, it is Markland Wood. Singular. The only thing that upsets this happy Etobicoke enclave is when people call it Markland Woods. Many residents have lived here for more than 30 years, and their kids return to buy homes once their careers are established. Families, drawn by quiet streets and well-respected schools (Millwood Junior School, Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, St. Clement Catholic School) are quickly brought into the fold. Community events include creek cleanups and the annual social at the country club.
HOUSING STOCK: Most of the character-laden brick homes date from the 1960s, including detached two-storey Georgian and Regency Revivals, backsplits and modern bungalows; posh condos abound on the northern border.
BARGAIN ZONES: The area is much in demand, and anything around $600,000, mostly found on Markland Drive, is a starter home.
THE VERDICT: Houses fetch multiple offers and close quickly. The tight community, schools and leafy streets make for a quiet refuge with easy access to town.
